‘I can live for two months on a good compliment.’ – Mark Twain

To compliment someone is to give a gift, a congratulatory kiss, a sign of approval.

Yes! You’ve made an excellent decision. You’re dancing in the right direction. Your footwork is impeccable!

This is a series of sincere compliments collected from the Bendigo community in an attempt to draw focus to the feelings of respect, love and appreciation. Rose is interested in the flow-on effect that can take place after a simple sentence is delivered. The strength in this work lies in its simplicity as it celebrates positive aspects of humanity and encourages the sharing of kindness.

Complimentary Lane is an extension of the Complimentary Caravan – a cosy space where people are invited to bathe in a soundtrack of compliments collected from their local community. The caravan has visited numerous locations and is the storage place for over 1,200 recorded and written compliments.

This project is curated and originally presented by Enlighten: A Festival of Projection, a City of Greater Bendigo Event occurring in the lead up to White Night Bendigo.

Enlighten: A Festival of Projection is supported by the Regional Centre for Culture Program, a Victorian Government initiative in partnership with the Dja Dja Wurrung Clans Aboriginal Corporation and the City of Greater Bendigo.
