White Night Geelong 2018
7pm Saturday 13 October – 2am Sunday 14 October
White Night is the city as you know it, but reimagined and transformed under the ephemeral cloak of night. From 7pm to 2am, local, national and international artists, musicians and performers will weave a spell over Bendigo and Geelong in a celebration of culture and creativity. A night where the surreal seems real, White Night is a rare opportunity to experience these beautiful regional cities in a different light. The event transforms the impossible into the possible through installation, lighting, exhibitions, street performances, film, music, dance and interactive events.
White Night is seeking Expressions of Interest from artists / groups / organisations who want to make a contribution in the following categories in either Bendigo or Geelong, or both:
- Installation / Visual Arts
- Lighting / AV / Projection / Film
- Music / Live Performance
When developing and submitting your idea, you are invited to consider the Creative Theme for 2018:
What if we all treated each other with kindness, respect and equality?
What if there was no prejudice, bigotry or discrimination?
What if we performed an act of love, goodwill or generosity at least once every day?
What if every single one of us mattered equally to every single one of us?
What if? ~ Anon
“The country is the lyrics, the town dramatic. When mingled, they make the most perfect musical drama.” ~ Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
“Twenty years from now, you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than those you did. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from safe harbour. Catch the wind in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” ~ Mark Twain
The Creative Theme is underpinned by the four creative pillars: Inclusion, Accessibility, Engagement and Innovation – which, when combined with the quotes above, will be used to determine the suitability of all Expressions of Interest submissions.
Inclusion / Inclusive for audiences and artists alike, everyone should be able to participate, experience and enjoy the event.
Accessibility / Accessible from both a practical and creative perspective, the audience needs to be able to travel through the experience with confidence and in comfort. The works and installations should also be accessible in terms of location and physical access, as well as subject matter.
Engagement / The works and installations should engage the audience emotionally and experientially, capture their attention and solicit responses from them. The works should also engage and involve the community, artists and patrons.
Innovation / The works and installations need to break conventions, be innovative and original. White Night should challenge perceptions, it should captivate and motivate, incite and inspire. White Night should be uplifting and exhausting, it should ignite the senses and lift the spirit.

How do I work out the budget?
The budget may be only indicative at this stage but, based on the size and scale of your work, items to include are artist fees, what costs you expect to create/build the work, any known technical costs to create, perform and install the work.
My work has been at other festivals and events, but not in Australia. Do I call it a “new” work?
No, this should be considered an “existing” work. If it has been presented before anywhere it is not considered a “new” work, but you should include information on where the work has previously been seen and /or performed, and any other information about how it was originally devised and created. We welcome works that have previously been seen overseas and in Australia. You may even want to put a twist on your existing work – White Night may be the platform to do it!
Do you pay artists to be involved?
Yes. White Night pays artists for their involvement and, where applicable, you should nominate your fee in the submission.
I’ve submitted before but have not been successful. Can I resubmit the same idea?
Yes, you can resubmit ideas from previous years.
I have an idea for the venue or location – can I include this with my submission?
Yes, White Night will consider suggested locations, but we reserve the right to determine the most suitable venue.
I am a lighting and audio supplier, do I submit an EOI to be involved?
If you have an idea for a work, you should submit via the EOI process. If you would like to be considered as a supplier and not an artist, you should contact White Night via the email enquiry address email: [email protected]
If I am not successful, can I get feedback as to where I went wrong?
While we extensively review and consider each EOI, it is impossible to respond to each individually due to the scale of the festival program. We keep all EOI submissions for consideration and aim to match performers with opportunities as they arise.
Why aren’t my images or files uploading?
If your images or files aren’t uploading properly, it may be worth ensuring that they are:
- No more than 2MB in size
- File type must be either JPEG or PDF
Things to keep in mind?
To assist in your submission, please note the following:
– Keep description or details of your work to word count specified
– Check image size, type and quality before attaching
– Clearly label any support documentation with the title of your work / submission
