In 2019, White Night Reimagined will take place across three nights in Melbourne from 22-24 August and White Night Ballarat will be held on September 21. Below you will find answers to some of the most frequently asked questions.
This year, White Night Reimagined will take place in Melbourne across three nights:
- Thursday 22nd August, 7pm – 12am
- Friday 23rd August, 7pm – 12am
- Saturday 24th August, 7pm – 2am
White Night Ballarat will return to the regional city on September 21.
White Night Melbourne has traditionally run for one night in the summer months with high attendance and critical acclaim. While White Night Melbourne has been hugely successful in February, the summer period is already extremely busy with events. Our winter months are traditionally quieter, providing a gap in our major events calendar.
The organisers undertook extensive research and worked with consumer focus groups to test a range of options around the timing and programming of White Night going forward. Based on this research, the decision was made to move White Night to winter across three nights. While we understand this won’t appeal to everyone, we’re really excited to give Melburnians and visitors a great reason to get out and explore the city during winter.
An extended winter season allows attendees to take their time discovering each precinct. The adventure is yours to design – venture to all three worlds on a single night or take an entire evening to discover one precinct. We believe the new format will give families the opportunity to enjoy the event earlier and get home at a reasonable time, while spreading the crowd over three nights will ease crowd congestion and make it a more enjoyable experience for everyone.
This year’s event will be held in three park and garden precincts – Carlton Gardens, Birrarung Marr and a third precinct to be announced soon. Our iconic cultural institutions will be open for extended hours with special programming, so once again you are invited to visit the National Gallery of Victoria, State Library Victoria, Melbourne Museum or Arts Centre Melbourne during these extended hours. Culinary and music offerings will extend into Melbourne’s restaurants, bars and venues. We’re excited to share our program with you as it unfolds – follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for the latest updates and announcements.
Due to the overwhelming success of previous White Night events, White Night Reimagined 2019 will be extended across three consecutive nights. The program will include installations, projections and feature large-scale live performance, along with new music and food offerings.
As August approaches, our website and social media channels will share program highlights and further information so that you can plan your night. Be sure to make note of public transport information, maps and other program details while planning your adventure.
The event is finishing earlier than previous years to allow for its expansion across three nights. White Night Reimagined will run well into the evening, finishing at midnight on Thursday & Friday and continuing until 2am on Saturday. We know there are a number of people who loved experiencing White Night in the wee small hours of the morning, but our data shows that only a small number of attendees come after 2am. We’re excited to deliver another fantastic White Night across times that will suit most attendees. Rest assured that Melbourne’s late-night restaurants, bars and music venues will be open as usual, for those wanting to continue the party after our programming wraps up.
Extending the event across three nights allows you to design your own experience. Whether you come after work on the Thursday or Friday night, or make a night of it with your family or friends on the Saturday, you can choose which night suits you best. If you’re bold, attend all three nights!
The sun setting earlier in winter means the programming can get underway, making the event more accessible to families, while restaurants, bars and music venues will still be open late for those who’d like to stay out longer. White Night Reimagined will continue to celebrate Melbourne’s renowned arts, culture, food and music and will further cement Melbourne’s reputation as a vibrant, creative, global city.
The program for White Night Reimagined will be released in June 2019, and will include items that you know and love such as installations and projections, but will feature exciting new large scale live performances, along with new music and food offerings.
Yes! Public transport such as trains, trams and buses will be available, with extra services to help people get around on the night and get home safely.
